“Singaporean table tennis players cannot win 6 or 7 gold medals at the 22nd SEA Games,” said the Chairman of Singaporean Table Tennis Federation on The Straits Times, before leading Singaporean team to Hanoi.
It is because our “gold generation of Jing Juhong” will not play while the young players are not experienced enough, and the tendency of hiring foreign players has come to a standstill. He complained, “Singapore now lacks many talents. The young players now concentrate on their study and ignore this professional career.”
J-Ho (ex-champion of the U-14 Southeast Asian) is a typical example. After winning one gold medal and four bronzes in many international competitions, this player decided to take university entrance exams. To solve this problem, Singapore is now looking for foreign players, especially from China and Hong Kong. However, the Community Development and Sports Ministry has decided to postpone the application consideration and check the immigration policy. It’s a common knowledge that foreign players are stronger than domestic ones. In a decade, the Singaporean table tennis had added 7 foreign players to the main frame of the team.
These foreign players helped the Singaporean table tennis to rank first with 14 gold medals, 5 silvers and 8 bronzes at the 18th SEA Games (1995) in Thailand. Now it is difficult to replace these players so that Singapore’s aim is to win only three gold medals (collective, double and individual). He said the Singaporeans should not be disappointed, because it would take from 3 to 5 years to reform the National Table Tennis. The coach of the National Table Tennis Team will be responsible for opening a new sports school.

Vietnam’s women gymnasts were jubilant on Friday afternoon after unexpectedly bringing home the gold medal in team competition.
“We did really well,” said a bubbling Tran Thi Phuong Th. She was competing in her first SEA Games. She spoke at the door of the room she shares with teammates in the La Thanh Hotel, where she had just had time to change clothes in preparation for the opening ceremonies. Behind her, three of her fellow gymnasts were huddled around the telephone giggling.
Dao Thi L, who had the fifth best score in the floor exercise, was unavailable for comment, as she was running down the hallway in a T-shirt and boxer shorts, shrieking.
Vietnam’s women narrowly edged out the silver medallists from Singapore. The total scores were 124.550 and 124.425, respectively. Thailand finished third with 123.850.
Malaysia’s three gymnasts had the highest individual scores. But because most other teams fielded six gymnasts each, the Malaysians earned fewer total points.

I’ve never competed in a big tournament before.” Ha Th. has been training since age six, practising seven to eight hours per day.
